With two rounds of play complete, I’m happily in the throes of March Madness. (Go Orange!) However, this time of year the bracket methodology seems to go beyond basketball.

If it wasn’t already clear where my love of thematic events stems from, my parents hosted an “O” themed dinner party. Bonus points were given to foods that were both round and started with an O—-onion rings, orecchiette, and osso bucco.
The nerdery didn’t stop there as they wanted appropriate music too. Luckily, their son inherited their penchant with a musical twist. Here is the evening’s playlist with songs invoking circles, wheels, and the ever-present “oh”.
When did Valentine’s Day turn into a pink-hued Halloween? At every turn yesterday, I was accosted by chocolate bars, conversation hearts, and no less than 6 varieties of Hershey kisses.

I recently questioned why the Presidential inauguration had to occur in winter when it was so cold. Clearly, our founding fathers didn’t realize we were going to be freezing outside during concerts, parades, and walks to fancy balls.
But then a friend responded, “It’s the perfect time of year to start anew.”
And, indeed it is.
January’s reflective nights and crisp-edged days help us lay the groundwork for the explosion of spring. As I thought of this new start for our year and our country, these songs began to tumble through my head.

Normally, “Listening Lately” is a miscellaneous bin of tracks that I can’t stop playing. This time around, however, a self-imposed travel ban during January has my subconscious wanderlust revealing itself through music. Only after compiling them did I notice a get-up-and-go theme. My luggage may be hibernating but these songs are taking me places …
A cacophony of coughing seems to have suddenly sprung up around me this week as the flu spreads over the city. This playlist is sure to help drown out the sniffling and sneezing. You might say it’s good medicine!

Two weeks ago I was surprised with a birthday trip to the west coast—an adventure from San Francisco down California’s central coast to Big Sur. We drove down the Pacific Coast Highway, and when the mountains met the ocean we lost radio transmission. It was the perfect escape. And the perfect reason to create our own playlist.
Luckily, I had just enough trip notice to download appropriate songs. :-)

Breaking a 525-game losing streak, our beloved Teddy Roosevelt finally won his first presidents bobblehead race yesterday at Nationals Park. AND, I got to see it firsthand! And as I’m prone to do, I forgot what was happening in the game and started tracking Teddy’s travails in music form.
Here’s to the continuation of Teddy’s and the Nats’ winning streaks!
This weekend, my friends and I are escaping the city to camp on the beach with the wild ponies of Assateague. With a car packed full of gear and these tunes, we’re sure to return with good memories (and lots and lots of sand).
This playlist is also simply a vehicle for Susan Boyle’s rendition of Wild Horses, which I love unabashedly.
